One Dollar Diet Project

I just read about the One Dollar Diet Project. If you haven’t read about it; I will post a link below. Two teachers went a whole month only eating $1 a day’s worth of food. They spent only $30 per person on food for the whole month. They prepared a variety of meals each day. Foods such as ramen noodles were limited to only 6 total. They undertook this project to bring awareness to global poverty issues.

I think this project is very inspiring. Global poverty is a major issue that needs to be addressed. There are over 1 billion people that live in extreme poverty worldwide. Extreme poverty is living on less than one dollar a day. I couldn’t imagine surviving on one dollar’s worth of food for even one day. It isn’t possible to satisfy your hunger or eat a healthy diet on a dollar a day.

This also made me think about the average American. How much do we spend on food a day? According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average American spends just under $17.00 a day on food. That’s about $500 a month. I think that projects like this help us to look at the big picture. It makes you realize just how fortunate we are in this country. Even in these dim economic times we still have a lot to be thankful for.

    Good project and good points….

We’re putting a slightly different spin on this approach but welcome everyone to come check us out and support our progress as I gear up for my next mission trip to Zambia; a country where living on just $1 a day is the norm.
