Research In Motion Unveils Its New Smartphone

Research in Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM) unveiled its new Blackberry operating system today. The new operating system is called the Blackberry 6 and is designed to compete against the Android and iPhone operating systems. The new operating system operates via touch screen and trackpad. The phone has expanded messaging capabilities that simplify managing social media and RSS feeds, an advanced multimedia experience that rivals the best in the industry, a convenient new Universal Search tool.”

A longtime complaint from Blackberry users has been how clunky the old browser was. The good news is the company has introduced a new user friendly browser. The new operating system has received rave reviews from analysts and system users.

Research in Motion has a lot counting on its new Blackberry phone and operating system. The phone needs to be a game changer for RIM to gain market share in the increasingly competitive smartphone market. Shares of Research in Motion were off 2.5% today as the stock retreated back to the $56 level.

I wouldn’t be in a hurry to buy shares at this level until seeing how customers respond to its new Blackberry phone. The Blackberry Torch 9800 is set to debut August 12th. I think that investors will get a better opportunity to buy shares in the $40’s again.

Any word on the BlackPad? I heard it referenced on Fast Money last week, and it’s supposed to be the next big thing to challenge the iPad.

On another note, if the share price pulls back any more, I would not be surprised to see the company get bought out.

    Chris,

I was watching Fast Money yesterday too and heard it referred to as the BlackPad or Blackboard. I believe that it’s supposed to come out this fall. RIM would be a good takeover target but I think they would fight off any such bid.
