Page Rank Schmage Rank

There are so many articles written about the importance of Google Page Rank.  I even wrote one myself on taking steps to increase your Page Rank. Google PageRank is important to website owners because it is one of the metrics that advertisers use to determine how much they are willing to pay for a particular ad on a website. While Google PageRank is a legitimate tool to use when assessing a site, there are other tools that are just as useful for determining the popularity of a website. Let’s take a look at a new player in the ranking game known as MozRank.

What is Google PageRank?

Google PageRank has been the king of ranking webpages for the past few years. Page Rank determines how popular a particular web page is by looking at the quantity of links that a site receives. Google then ranks the site based on the quality of the sites that are linking to it. You get more juice when a site with a higher Page Rank links to you than a lower level site. The most popular websites have a PageRank of 10 whereas the least popular websites have a PageRank of 0.

Why not MozRank?

MozRank is a much more comprehensive ranking system and a direct competitor to Google’s ranking system. MozRank is increasing in popularity amongst advertisers and SEO companies. MozRank will tell you exactly how well liked a page is on the Internet. MozRank measures a site’s popularity on major search engines, the popularity of a site around the blogosphere, traffic rank, and links to the site. Links from popular websites will increase the Mozrank of a site the most. The top rating that MozRank gives to a site is a 10 and the lowest rating is a 1.

Both systems rely heavily on backlinks and are useful in judging the popularity of a webpage. The more links to a given page, the more popular it becomes. The MozRank advantage is that it updates much more quickly than Google’s PageTank system. This is important because advertisers want the most accurate up to date information as possible. Potential advertisers using MozRank can get a more accurate gauge of a site’s presence on the web before spending precious ad dollars.

What do you think of MozRank?

I have actually found that the MozRank and PageRank of my site are pretty similar. The problem is that this is not always the case. Since it can take a year or more for your PageRank to update, your site may not properly reflect it’s true web presence on the Internet. You can find out your site’s MozRank by visiting Website Grader. If you want to learn more about MozRank, you can read about it here.

Do you think that MozRank could unseat the behemoth that is Google’s Page Rank? Which ranking system do you prefer to use in judging the popularity of your site?

  1. Thanks for highlighting. It’s great to raise awareness of mozRank out there.

  2. I guess I didn’t realize that mozRank was such an effective tool for measuring a site.

I’ll have to pay more attention to that in the future. Thanks for the tip!

  3. Well, since Page Rank rarely updates and mozRank has been updating frequently thus far, I would say that mozRank is a much more effective tool. It is all over the internet how PageRank has not been updated in ages that I don’t know why people still take it so seriously when there is a viable replacement instead.

  4. Thanks for another great Moz review! Love the title by the way!

I am still exploring ranking in some matters. While you compare PageRank to MozRank, I wonder what’s the big difference between MozRank and Alexa Rank?? I am not sure I get the point here. Thank you!

    • avatar Mark says:

Alexa Rank isn’t about links at all. It’s more about site traffic over a 3 month time frame. MozRank is more about links and is a much more comprehensive ranking system.

  6. Thanks for writing this up and for linking out to me. :)

I’m new so I like mozRank better. My Page Rank is 0 and probably will be 0 forever. At least my mozRank is getting updated and slowly slowly improving.

  8. I don’t really look at Page Rank any more because its so out dated. When was the last time they updated their bar, its been months? Mozrank is update more frequently and therefore a more accurate tool to use.

    • avatar Mark says:

I have read that it’s months and some places say its been a year. I just wish Google would tell you when your Page Rank will be changing.
